Modi to visit Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand over six days
A day after concluding the Japan summit, the Prime Minister's Office announced a three-nation swing through the Indo-Pacific: Jakarta, Melbourne and Auckland.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from 6 to 11 July, the Prime Minister’s Office announced on 3 July — a three-nation itinerary that begins in Jakarta and ends with the first state visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in four decades.
The announcement came on the closing day of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to New Delhi for the India-Japan annual summit, making July a heavy month for India’s Indo-Pacific diplomacy.
Jakarta first
Modi visits Indonesia from 6 to 8 July at the invitation of President Prabowo Subianto. It is his fourth visit to the country but his first bilateral one since the two countries raised their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2018, according to the PMO release. The two leaders will review the partnership in bilateral talks, and Modi will address a gathering of the Indian diaspora in Jakarta.
The itinerary includes a stop outside the capital: Modi will visit the Prambanan temple complex at Yogyakarta, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The release ties the stop to the “historical and warm people-to-people ties” between the two countries.
Business in Melbourne
From Indonesia, Modi travels to Melbourne from 8 to 10 July at the invitation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Besides bilateral talks with Albanese and a call on Governor-General Sam Mostyn, the Melbourne leg is built around business: Modi will take part in the India-Australia CEOs Forum and address top business leaders from both countries, along with a diaspora gathering the release calls “a strong pillar of the India-Australia relationship”.
Auckland, after four decades
The last stop carries the most history. At the invitation of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Modi makes a state visit to Auckland on 10 and 11 July, the first state visit of an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in four decades, according to the release. The two leaders will review what the PMO describes as a relationship that has moved significantly in the past two years, especially in trade, commerce and defence. Modi will also meet business and sports figures in Auckland and address the Indian diaspora there.
The PMO has named no agreements or outcome documents for any of the three legs. Each capital will show its hand as the visit unfolds, beginning in Jakarta on Monday.
